Yatra and Tourism
Jammu and Kashmir is expecting a boost in tourism with the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, scheduled to begin on July 3. People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti expressed hope that the yatra will attract more tourists to J&K, which has seen a slump in visitor numbers after the Pahalgam terror attack in April that claimed 26 lives.
Mufti stated that while train services have resumed, tourist footfall in Kashmir remains sluggish. However, she believes that once the Amarnath Yatra begins, tourist inflow will definitely rise, and all the deserted tourist spots will flourish. The yatra is expected to benefit local businesses, including hotel owners and pony operators who have been troubled due to the decline in tourist arrivals ¹.
The Amarnath Yatra is a significant pilgrimage that combines devotion, adventure, and breathtaking natural beauty. Devotees can choose between trekking and helicopter packages, with various routes and accommodations available. The yatra typically takes place over 43 days, and authorities have implemented measures to ensure a smooth and safe experience for pilgrims.
With the commencement of the Amarnath Yatra, Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism industry is likely to receive a much-needed boost, providing relief to those dependent on tourism and contributing to the J&K’s economic growth.
