The recent assurance by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to look into the demands of Kashmir’s apple traders is a welcome move.

The apple industry in Kashmir is facing a severe crisis due to the import of foreign apples, which has led to a significant decline in the prices of local apples.

This has resulted in heavy financial losses for growers and traders, threatening the livelihoods of thousands of people dependent on the sector.

To address the crisis, the government needs to take concrete steps, such as levying import duties on foreign apples to level the playing field and safeguard the apple industry from unfair competition.

A Market Intervention Scheme is also necessary to stabilize apple prices and ensure market access for local growers. Furthermore, enhanced transportation infrastructure and access to better pesticides and their proper use are crucial for improving fruit quality and yield.

The upcoming budget presents an opportunity for the government to address the crisis head-on and provide relief to the apple industry.

The implementation of these measures will not only benefit the apple industry but also have a positive ripple effect on the local economy. It is essential for the government to engage with stakeholders, including farmers, traders, and industry experts, to develop a comprehensive plan to support the apple sector.
