Extreme weather condition
After the heavy snowfall, which has paralysed life in Kashmir to great extent now there is a wave of chill with temperatures dipping in minus, turning Kashmir into a virtual deep freezer.
Kashmir’s famous Dal Lake froze from the past several days as a severe cold wave in the valley continued with Srinagar recording the coldest night in 30 years.
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 8.4 degree Celsius, the coldest temperature recorded in the city since 1991 when the mercury had plunged to minus 11.8 degree Celsius, officials in the weather department said. In 1995, the minimum temperature was minus 11.3 degree Celsius.
According to the Met department of Kashmir, the lowest recorded minimum temperature in Srinagar was minus 14.4 degrees Celsius in 1893. The rest of the valley is reeling under intense cold.
These extreme weather conditions have been prevailing in the forty days of chillai kalan which is otherwise a harshest period of winters here.
As the sunset brings curtains down on any warmth in the atmosphere, sub zero temperatures throughout the night makes elderly people and children vulnerable to ailments.
The weatherman in Kashmir has predicted that these sub zero temperatures are going to stay for some days and have predicted clear skies in Kashmir, which is not good news for the common man living here.
