Traffic mess
Not only Srinagar city but most of the townships in Kashmir valley have been witnessing traffic mess in the past several years and the problems is only compounding. The administration is trying to pass on the responsibility from one wing of the government to another and the traffic police is busy in collecting challans to show that they are present on the ground and doing their bit to streamline the traffic.
Recently for better traffic management in Srinagar city, the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir chaired a high level meeting to review measures being taken to promptly overcome the issues regarding decongestion, encroachments, traffic signals and violation of traffic rules.
The meeting discussed various prompt measures which need to be taken in this regard including filling pot holes, macadamizing the patches, concrete barricading at major places, construction of traffic assistance booths, realigning the vendors, installing main hole covers, covering the drains, erection of intelligent traffic signal system & signage, putting into services dust sucking machines, reviewing the route permits, introducing e-buses for women commuters, removal of encroachments from bus stops, parking spaces on Boulevard road, timing for boarding & de-boarding of school buses and setting up of a helpline for any kind of assistance.
With schools open, it is very difficult to manage traffic during the peak hours in morning and evening. Traffic police in the present circumstances is only lifting the vehicles by cranes to their compound and are fining people without any justification. When the government cannot provide the parking space, where can people keep their vehicles while as they have to come out of their homes for their routine work. Instead of realizing the short comings, of other wings of the government, traffic department is only trying to show to the government that they can streamline the traffic by fines.
