After the rains
Another spell of heavy rains has virtually thrown life out of gear in Jammu and Kashmir with highways getting closed. There are not only heavy rains in the plains of Kashmir but upper reaches received light to moderate snowfall.
As per MeT officials, the ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded seven to eight inches of fresh snowfall during the night while Pahalgam and Sonmarg recorded light snow.
Srinagar city witnessed water-logging in low lying areas due to which traffic jams were witnessed in several parts of the city. It is very difficult for the authorities to clear the roads as the drainage system of Srinagar city needs immediate attention of authorities if they have to solve this problem on a permanent basis.
Water logging of even the roads in Srinagar city not to speak of low lying areas is a matter of concern not only for the government but for the people who are living here.
It is the responsibility of the government, especially the engineering wing of sewerage and drainage systems, to look for the solutions on a permanent basis and not go for the patch work as they have been doing in the past several decades.
This ad hoc approach of the government and the engineers has resulted in the present mess of the situation and each spell of rains and snow proves that the government has not seriously worked on the ground to set right such problems for future.
