The inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sparked optimism among tourism stakeholders, with many calling it a game-changer for Sonamarg’s economy. The tunnel, built at a cost of ?2,717 crore, is set to ensure all-season connectivity, particularly during harsh winters when heavy snowfall cuts off the region.

For decades, Sonamarg—a popular summer destination—remained inaccessible in winter due to avalanches and road blockages. With the Z-Morh Tunnel now operational, hoteliers, transporters, and adventure tourism operators expect a steady influx of visitors, extending the tourism season beyond the usual summer months.

“This tunnel is not just about connectivity; it is about unlocking Sonamarg’s full tourism potential,” said a local hotelier.
“Now, winter sports like skiing and snowboarding can thrive here, creating new business and employment opportunities.”

Apart from tourism, the improved access is expected to benefit local residents by easing transportation, medical emergencies, and supply chain logistics. The project is also seen as a step towards enhancing border-area connectivity, with strategic implications for the region.

As thousands gathered to witness the inauguration, the excitement was palpable, with residents welcoming the tunnel as a milestone in the region’s development. (KNS)
