Our men couldn’t retaliate due to fear of civilian casualty: IGP Vijay Kumar
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir zone Vijay Kumar, on Friday stated that militants who carried out attack in Nowgam area of Srinagar district have been identified and soon will be neutralized. Refuting the queries of any security lapse in the attack, IGP said the street from where militants appeared was extreme narrow and if our men retaliated, it would have killed civilians.
Talking to media personnel, IGP said those carried out strike on police personnel in Nowgam area of Srinagar district have been identified and will be neutralized soon. He said the prima-facie suggested that attackers belong to proscribed militant outfit Jaish-e-Muhammad.
IGP said that ahead of August 15 celebrations, the security apparatus was asked to keep vigil on suspected elements as there were inputs that militant will carry out attack in the district ahead of August 15.
“They appeared from a bottle-necked street and fired upon police personnel indiscriminately which left two cops dead and another injured”, IGP said and adding the prima-facie suggested that attackers belong to JeM and have been identified.
When asked about security lapse, IGP said that the street from which militants appeared and fired was narrow and often witnessing civilian movement so if our men retaliated, it would have killed civilian people.
“There was no security lapse. Our men practiced maximum restraint for the safety of civilians, it is why they didn’t retaliate”, IGP added. (KNS)
