Sarjan Barkati released from detention
Religious preacher Sarjan Barkati was released on Friday, a day after he was detained by the police in Zainpora, Shopian.
Unnamed official sources told a local news agency, Global News Service that Barkati was released late in the afternoon. He was detained yesterday.
Earlier, he was released after four years in detention in October 2020 after he was arrested during the civilian uprising in the aftermath of the killing of Hizb commander Burhan Wani in 2016.
Soon after his arrest, he was subsequently booked under Public Safety Act for organising anti-government rallies. The cleric had earned the sobriquets like “pied piper of Kashmir” during 2016 agitation for his peculiar method of sloganeering that attracted large crowds.
