Militant and OGW killed in Shopian encounter
Srinagar: A militant and an alleged Over Ground Worker (OGW) were killed by Quick Reaction Team (QRT) of Rashtriya Rifles (RR) in south Kashmir district of Shopian in the wee hours, official sources said.
Meanwhile, mobile internet service in Kulgam was suspended as a precautionary measure to prevent rumours.
They said a Naka checking was established by QRT of 44 RR at village Moolu Chitragam, Shopian, following a tip off about the militant movement. However, at 0100 hrs a vehicle was signaled to stop by the naka party, they said adding the vehicle jumped the check post and tried to fled away. Security forces immediately opened fire, they added.
Later two bodies were recovered in the area, sources said adding the deceased were later identified as Firdous Ahmad Bhat, who had joined militancy only a month ago.
Another person was identified as Sajjad Ahmad, driver of the vehicle. It is alleged that Sajjad was OGW. However, locals alleged that he was a driver and had nothing to do with militancy.
Sajjad and Firdous are residents of Kulgam, where additional security forces have been deployed at sensitive areas to prevent demonstration.
