Following objections from the TMC, BJP’s Swapan Dasgupta on Tuesday resigned from his Rajya Sabha seat.

Sources said he has sent his resignation to the Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu.

TMC’s Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra tweeted saying, “Swapan Dasgupta resigns From Rajya Sabha. Thank you, Sir- we wish you well for the upcoming WB polls”.

A nominated Rajya Sabha member, Swapan Dasgupta is contesting the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections on a BJP ticket.

Raising an objection, Mahua Moitra on Monday said he could be disqualified for filing a nomination as a BJP candidate under the 10th Schedule of the Constitution.

She had tweeted saying: “Swapan Dasgupta is BJP candidate for WB polls. 10th Schedule of Constitution says nominated RS member to be disqualified if he joins any political party AFTER expiry of 6 months from oath. He was sworn in April 2016, remains unallied. Must be disqualified NOW for joining BJP”.

Sources, meanwhile, say there is a lot of “anger” among BJP cadres in Bengal over seat distribution, especially over the feilding of sitting MPs like Dasgupta, Babul Supriyo and Locket Chatterjee.

“Party’ s stare leaders working in these constituencies are angry over tickets being denied to them. The delay in seat announcement may be a part of the strategy but that too is causing unrest among the BJP state leadership,” said a source familiar with the ground situation in West Bengal.
