Meet with J&K leaders
All of a sudden, the central government has decided to hold a meeting with the mainstream political parties of Jammu and Kashmir without making the agenda public.
This new political activity in Jammu and Kashmir is being watched keenly as the earlier rumors about the further division of UT of Jammu and Kashmir were denied by LG Manoj Sinha.
Most political parties in Jammu and Kashmir seem to have reached a consensus to attend the upcoming meeting scheduled with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 24. Some political parties are hoping that the meet will mark a new phase in the region and will pave the way for early elections.
Jammu and Kashmir has been under central rule since June 2018, when the elected government which was being run jointly by PDP and BJP lost support in the assembly resulting in governor’s rule.
Then chief minister Mehbooba Mufti had to resign as the BJP pulled out the support from the government. There has been no election in Jammu and Kashmir since then as after the abrogation of article 370 when the erstwhile state was divided into two union territories.
Though the UT of Jammu and Kashmir has the legislature, the UT of Ladakh is directly under the control of the Union Government. The Union Home Ministry which is controlling both the UT’s held a series of meetings in New Delhi about the development and security scenario in the recent past.
