Kashmir Press Club condemns assault of journos by police in Srinagar
The Kashmir Press Club (KPC) on Tuesday condemned the thrashing of media persons, who were covering a Muharram procession, by police in the summer capital, Srinagar.
A KPC spokesperson said that the club demands that the administration take action against the concerned policemen involved in the incident and sensitise the rank in police department.
He said scores of media persons were on Tuesday thrashed when they were performing their professional duties at Jahangir Chowk in Srinagar. “The media persons, including photojournalists, were covering Muharram procession at Jahangir Chowk today, when the sleuths from Shergari Police Station beat them to the pulp without any provocations,” he said.
Observing that the media persons were performing their professional duty, he said that the police action was uncalled for and unfortunate. The Club reiterates that the police authorities need to respect the freedom of the press as enshrined under the Constitution and ensure strict disciplinary action against the guilty policemen involved in the incident.
