LOCAL BODIES
Local bodies in Jammu and Kashmir have elected members and recently they met Om Birla who is speaker of parliament. During the interaction with these members he appreciated their efforts for the local governance and these members of local bodies of Anantnag said that Shri Birla’s visit has boosted confidence of local representatives
While talking to these members he said that decentralization of power is key to the success of democracy and development. The initiative of the speaker which is intended to strengthen the institutions of governance and planning at the grass-root level has been launched in Kashmir and his interaction with the elected members has shown the change on ground.
He also met representatives of the District Development Council (DDC), Block Development Council (BDC) and Sarpanches of Panchayati Raj Institutions of Anantnag District and other nearby areas at Pahalgam in South Kashmir.
Panchayati Raj Institutions in the UT have been strengthened and he appealed to the local representatives for their greater involvement in making the democratic institutions more transparent and accountable.
Observing that the roots of Indian democracy are in our tradition, he urged the Panchayati Raj representatives to work towards fulfillment of hopes and aspirations of the people.
