SRINAGAR: As ‘Chillai Kalan’ concludes, Jammu and Kashmir braces for a spell of wet weather, with the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar predicting rain and snow over the coming days. The 40-day-long harsh winter period, which ended today, remained largely dry except for two brief spells of snowfall.

The minimum temperatures recorded across the region today indicate freezing conditions in Kashmir and Ladakh, while parts of Jammu saw relatively moderate temperatures. Srinagar recorded -1.5°C, Qazigund -2.0°C, and Gulmarg remained the coldest at -6.5°C. In Ladakh, Leh saw a low of -8.6°C, while Drass recorded -7.9°C. In contrast, Jammu registered 9.1°C, and Katra was slightly higher at 9.6°C.

According to the MeT office, the weather is expected to remain cloudy today, with a likelihood of widespread rain and snow over Jammu and Kashmir this afternoon. A fairly widespread spell of light to moderate rain, snow, and thunderstorms is expected on Thursday.

The forecast indicates generally dry and cloudy weather on Friday, with the possibility of light rain and snow over isolated regions. Another widespread spell of precipitation is likely on Saturday. The wet spell is set to continue until February 4, with a forecast of widespread rain and snow across Jammu and Kashmir on February 3.

Residents and travellers are advised to stay updated on weather conditions, especially in higher altitudes, where snowfall could impact transportation and daily activities.
