Climate change
The sudden showers in the month of July are playing havoc with the population and with infrastructure in many parts of J&K State. Basically a climate change, the flash floods in Rajouri and Poonch areas of Jammu in the recent past has played with human lives and also with infrastructure. Similar flash floods have resulted in lot of damage to the public property in the Chenab Valley region.
Scientists and thinkers have been warning about this climate change, but government has not taken seriously any of their cautions and precautions. In this direction recently a three-day workshop on the sensitization of media persons in the area of climate change and to engage them on climate change adaptation was held.
The experts informed that the Indian Himalayan Region is one of the most vulnerable mountain systems in the world. Jammu and Kashmir is the third most flood prone state in the country, the experts informed. If effective measures are taken in time, it may be possible to prevent further degradation of the ecosystem. The experts hoped that these workshops will enhance the capacity of environmental journalists and help them to highlight climate change adaptation issues in local and regional context
During the three-day workshop, experts from environment, agriculture, wildlife and earth sciences will be speaking on science and policy related to climate change and adaptation initiatives in context of Jammu & Kashmir. It is the duty of the government to implement such recommendations so save people from the disasters of changing eco-system in Kashmir.
In the current summer, already the authorities are finding it very difficult to help people in the flash floods and because of the climate change there have been lot of such heavy spells of rains in different parts J&K State. The changing pattern of rains is showing that the authorities will have to take such threats very seriously and listen to the experts to save the environment.
