Student community in Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir would have been very happy if the authorities would have lifted the ban on 4G services here. While in the Supreme Court the government has said that restoration of speed internet was connected with national security, there is growing demand from many influential quarters for lifting of ban on 4G services here.
JK administration after having a review meeting of ground situation in Kashmir valley has decided to extend the ban on 4G services till May 11, 2020.
The order also states that the fixed-line internet shall be available with mac-binding. Despite repeated appeals by various rights groups and healthcare professionals, the government has not restored the high-speed internet.
Recently UN body dealing with health issues has expressed concern over the curbs on the internet services in Kashmir amid pandemic.
The report is being submitted to Human Rights Council’s 44th session scheduled from June 15 to July 3, 2020. According to the report, the continuation of restrictions on internet has been troubling, amid outbreak of COVID-19.
“In the context of the pandemic, it has been especially troubling to observe the continuation of several instances of Internet shutdowns. The most prominent has been the long-term disruption that the Government of India has imposed on Kashmir,” reads the report.
