As we have left behind the harsh period of winter known as Chalia Kallan, but in the month of February, sub zero temperatures are prevailing both in Kashmir valley and Ladakh region. The temperature continued to trend downward in Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh as Drass remained the coldest place in the region recording minus 30 degrees Celsius, a meteorological department official said recently.

This trend of downward temperatures is continuing and cold nights are being witnessed in entire Kashmir valley even in this month of February. Winter has been very harsh in this current season as the first snowfall, created lot of problems for the people when it hit the horticulture industry also in the first week of November 2019.

There were lot of snowfalls in the entire period and it has created a pile of hardships for common people especially in hilly areas. Due to the cold nights and sub zero temperatures, many villages in the hilly areas remained cut off from rest of the valley and there is no trace of administration as these villagers have been left to fend for themselves.

Any medical emergency in such cut off villages with heavy snow on the roads invites lot of trouble even to bring any patient to the nearby hospital. Such conditions have added to the problems of the people and administration has not been responsive to the needs of public especially in the hilly areas of Kashmir.
