There are no visible signs of the government in the rural areas of Kashmir especially after the clampdown started by the authorities post abrogation of article 370 on August 5, 2019. It has resulted huge damage to the environment and to the delicate balance which was being maintained in the snow fed streams in entire Kashmir valley.

Different wings of the government especially Geology and Mining Department along with Fisheries Department used to maintain vigil around these snow fed streams so that the trout culture could p[rogress and the nallah’s could be saved for the future generation along with its natural stones and pebbles.

In the winter season, with media having very little access to the rural areas, many gangs especially the sand and pebble mafia ruled the roost in the rural areas. They at many places, got even the JCB’s and tractors along with trolleys inside the nallah’s and extracted all the pebbles and sand from these natural streams.

They were able to sell them in the market and earned lot of money during the current winters but their activity has lot of consequences for the nature and also about the furry of the nature against such disturbance of natural balance.

With no stones and sand in this snow fed streams the gushing water of summers can even play havoc with villages near to these streams. Trout fish culture has been disturbed and the brown trout is now almost negligible in these water streams because of the constant extract of sand and pebbles by these mafia men who are allegedly having an understanding with police and other wings of the government.

All the wings of the government responsible for these water streams have miserably failed in the past several months to preserve them and also police has really played a role of a villain by helping the sand mafia.
