Thousands of street dogs have become a grave problem in Srinagar city for the people especially for children. As the government is looking the other way, there have been lot of cases young boys and girls were hospitalized due to dog bites.

In the evening hours and morning hours it is very difficult for the students to go to private tuition centers due to dog menace on the streets of Srinagar.

With spring season coming soon, schools and other educational institutions have been opened in Kashmir valley. The threat perception about the dog bites had increased and the children while going and coming back from the educational institution face the threat of dog bites in their localities.

All those limbs of the government who are responsible for providing respite to the citizens are not visible and there is more in the media only then on the ground about the real situation of Srinagar city. Srinagar city is still having heaps of garbage and thousands of street dogs while as the authorities are claiming that they are going to make this city a smart city.

Dog menace is only increasing as there is no way out for the population but to confront the problem. In the recent past, a senior officer in the administration said that the government will soon start Animal Birth Control- Anti Rabies (ABC-AR) programme in all districts of J&K.

The initiative is aimed to keep a check on the rising dog population, he said, but there is no timeline given by him for the start of the programme as the population of dogs is only increasing.

It is a welcome step for the common people as the dog bit cases have increased in Srinagar city and the victims are teenagers. Government should focus on this programme and save the population of Srinagar city from such menace at the earliest.

Students will have to bear for sometime more unless the government really starts this programme and gives them respite from street dogs.
