Wular Lake is not only one of the biggest lakes of Asia but also helps the government to move the flood waters from this big lake out back in Jhelum. It has the distinction of having connection with a lot of water bodies in North Kashmir including Manasbal Lake and also river Jhelum passes through it and comes out at Sopore before becoming a roaring river in Baramulla district.

Recently Wular lake came in news for wrong reasons as Wular conservation officials lodged a complaint against Municipal Council Sopore for using the lake to dump solid waste.

The complaint said since the activities of MC Sopore are in violation of High Court, National Green Tribunal orders and Wetland Conservation Rules, the WUCMA team in official capacity and in compliance of directions from superiors initiated action in the instant matter and restrained them from doing these illegal activities.

However, the complaint said, the violators who were present at the site did not pay any heed and on the contrary stopped WUCMA officials from performing their official duty.

In the police complaint WUCMA have claimed that they were manhandled, abused and they were left with no choice but to seek police intervention.

WUCMA claimed that they have a video clip also showing how MC Sopore officials in violation of rules were dumping solid waste in the fresh waters of Wular Lake.
