While the government is maintaining that the latest rice being distributed at the different outlets of the government is 43-grade rice, high in nutrition value, the residents fear that it is plastic like rice and have returned rice bags to the government in the Kani Kadal area of Sriangar.

Locals told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), a consumer, who took two bags of ration, each weighing 50 kgs to his home but he returned both bags stating that the bags were filled with plastic rice. “This is strange that now we are being given plastic rice,” a group of locals alleged and demanded a probe into the issue. Elderly people of Kani Kadal said that whosoever consumes the “plastic rice” will die and Consumer and Public Distribution Department (CA&PD) must look into the issue as to why people of Srinagar are being distributed with plastic rice.

However, Director CA&PD Kashmir Dr Abdul Salam Mir told KNO that the allegations about distribution of plastic rice were baseless. “The fact is it is 45-grade rice which has a high nutritional value. It is not plastic rice. This was being distributed some two months ago,” he said and urged people not to believe in rumours about distribution of plastic rice.
