Malicious App Handlers Extort Nearly Rupees 2.5 Lacs from Srinagar Man

Srinagar: In just a span of forty odd minutes, a Srinagar-man was extorted of nearly Rs 2.5 lakh after coaxed into installation of a malware app by unknown handlers on Tuesday.

Talking to GNS the victim, Mohammad Altaf, a resident of Tengpora, said that on Tuesday evening, at around 7:45 PM, he received a call from a person who claimed to be an agent of the private telecom Company. The caller asked him to top-up mobile number with ten rupees from particular App besides asked him to install an app from (Google) Playstore or else the services will be disconnected. “I made the transaction, installed the app and went to offer prayers,” he said, adding, “during the course of prayers, I sensed several messages as my mobile phone beeped multiple times. However I didn’t pay attention as the prayers were going on.”

After finishing the prayers, he said, “I got to read that there have been some eight subsequent transactions made from my account totaling to nearly Rs two-lac forty seven thousand, three hundred fifty rupees,” the victim said.

It all happened within 45 minutes after installing the app, he said
“I’ve lodge a complaint and shared all the details with cyber police,” the victim said, adding, “they have assured me of their support in the matter.” (GNS)
