Wetlands and their importance

The biodiversity of Kashmir valley is deeply dependent on the water bodies and wetlands which have diminished with time here because of the encroachments and land filling.

Recently the government of Jammu and Kashmir has tried to retrieve these water bodies and wetlands and have started removing the encroachments in and around them.

In this direction recently Divisional Commissioner Kashmir said that Wetlands not wastelands, wetlands are natural wealth lands supporting vast biodiversity.

He visited the interior of Hokersar wetland to catch sight of migratory birds and also inspected the retrieval measures taken by the administration to preserve such wetlands.

Kashmir has a chain of wetlands supporting vast biodiversity most of which circumvent Srinagar and Budgam with huge potential of tourism and employment generation, said Div Com while visiting Hokersar wetland on the occasion of World Wetlands Day celebrated by the Department of Wildlife Protection, J&K.

The Pledge wall was signed by Regional Wildlife Warden Kashmir; Officers of Deptt of Wildlife Protection, president, NPWWF, NGO; Wetland Mitras and civil society members.

He underlined the responsibility of people for the protection of wetlands and said that encroachments shall be dealt with strict action.
